Introduction Abortion has been a recurring issue in our society for over a century, responsible for countless marches, protests, and debates. Both sides display zealous passion for their belief. Since the well-known Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade, declaring that women can constitutionally decide for themselves whether or not to have an abortion, Pro-life activists across the country have have dedicated their lives to overturning this amendment (Roston 2008). Beginning in the late 1800s, as birth control and contraceptives gained popularity, Americans became more dependant on these means of â€Å"protection,† increasing sexual behavior across the country (Judie 1986). Later, abortion was legalized as a potential solution to the resulting unintentional pregnancies, sparking empathy in people who believed in the humanity of the unborn child (D Souza 2009). The Right-to-Life movement was only the start to the wildfire of pro-life citizens throughout our nation. History of Abortion One of the first displays of this movement was led by a group of feminists including Susan B. Anthony that took a stand against abortion in a speech entitled â€Å"Social Purity† in 1875 (History 2012). Prior to and following this, states all over America had begun making abortion illegal, or putting restrictions on abortion procedures, and by 1965, all fifty states had acquired these laws (Abortion 2004). Ursula makes a deal with Ariel to transform her into a human for three days in exchange for Ariel’s voice When Ursula used her magic to turn Ariel into a human and take away her voice that was Ariel’s supernatural aid because it caused her to be able to go and win Eric’s heart. But it’s also bittersweet because Ariel must receive the â€Å"kiss of true love† from Eric; otherwise, she will transform back into a mermaid and belong to Ursula. Ariel’s quest is now in motion and she must find Eric. Instead Eric finds Ariel on the beach and takes her to his castle. Ariel spends time with Eric, and at the end of the second day, they almost kiss but Flotsam and Jetsam flip their boat and ruin it. That was Ariel’s first obstacle. Ursula then disguises herself as a beautiful young woman named Vanessa and appears onshore singing with Ariel’s voice. Eric recognizes the song and, in her disguise, Ursula casts a hypnotic enchantment on Eric to make him forget about Ariel. The next day, Ariel finds out that Eric will be married to the disguised Ursula. Scuttle discovers that Vanessa is Ursula in disguise, and informs Ariel who immediately goes after the wedding barge. This is Ariel’s second obstacle. Sebastian informs Triton, and Scuttle disrupts the wedding with the help of various animals. In the chaos, the nautilus shell around Ursula’s neck is broken, restoring Ariel’s voice and breaking Ursula’s enchantment over Eric. Eric rushes to kiss her, but the sun sets and Ariel transforms back into a mermaid. Ursula reveals herself and kidnaps Ariel. Ariel now faces her final test. Triton confronts Ursula and demands Ariel’s release, but the deal is inviolable. At Ursula’s urging, the king agrees to take Ariel’s place as Ursula’s prisoner. Ariel is released as Triton transforms into a polyp and loses his authority over Atlantica. Ursula declares herself the new ruler and a struggle ensues in which Ursula accidentally kills Flotsam and Jetsam. In her rage, Ursula uses the trident to grow to monstrous proportions. Ariel and Eric reunite on the surface just before Ursula grows past and towers the two. She then gains full control of the entire ocean, creating a storm with a maelstrom and shipwrecks, one of which Eric commandeers. As Ursula attempts to destroy a trapped Ariel in the maelstrom, Eric runs Ursula through the abdomen with the ship’s splintered bowsprit killing her. Ursula’s power breaks, causing Triton and all the other polyps in Ursula’s garden to revert back into their original forms. Hamlet Soliloquy Essay The character of Prince Hamlet, in Shakespeares Hamlet, displays many strong yet justified emotions. For instance, the To be or Not To Be soliloquy, perhaps one of the most well known quotes in the English language, Hamlet actually debates suicide. His despair, sorrow, anger, and inner peace are all justifiable emotions for this troubled character. Hamlets feeling of despair towards his life and to the world develops as the play moves on. In Hamlets first soliloquy he reveals that his despair has driven him to thoughts of suicide; How weary (horrible) His law gainst self slaughter. Likewise, when Hamlet talks to his friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Act 2, scene 2, Hamlet wishes they tell the King and Queen that he has lost all mirth, in this world so foul and pestilent. In his To be or not to be soliloquy, he expresses his despair through thoughts of suicide, suggesting that suicide is an easy way to end lifes conflicts. But luckily he concludes that the fear of an unknown afterlife is what keeps us living. All of Hamlets thoughts of despair can be understood when one looks at the horrible conflicts Hamlet goes through. Sorrow, perhaps the most evident emotion, is very well developed throughout the play. Initially, the only cause of Hamlets sorrow is his fathers death. However, after reading Act 1, scene 2, we see in Hamlets asides that another source of his melancholy is his mothers hasty marriage to Claudius, the new king of Denmark. Further, when Queen Gertrude asks her son why his fathers death seems so important, he replies, Seems, madam? Nay it is. I know not seems. In addition, Shakespeare reveals another source of sadness; now Hamlet is alone, with the most loved character in his life, Ophelia, rejecting him. This cause is well brought out in Hamlets soliloquy in which he states; Now I am alone. O, what a rouge and peasant slave am I! Finally, when Hamlet discovers that Ophelia had died, new reasons for Hamlets extreme feelings of sorrow are added. In fact, his sorrow is so great that Forty thousand brothers/Could not (with all their quantity and love) Make up my sum. Thus, Hamlets well developed sadness, is reasonable throughout the play. Unfortunately, Hamlets thoughts of mourning are replaced by those of anger. Most readers of Hamlet agree, to some extent or another, that Hamlet is well justified in expressing anger. Perhaps the first incident of Hamlets true expression of anger is during his scene with the ghost in Act I. He states, I with wings as swift as thought.. .sweep to my revenge. Furthermore, in spite of his love for Ophelia, when he discovers she is not being truthful with him in Act III scene 1, he becomes outraged, dismissing his love for her. I loved you once, and then loved you not. Thus, to a nunnery go. He continues to abuse the ideas of marriage and womanhood to Ophelia in his feigned madness until he finally leaves. These attacks on marriage and womanhood should not have been directed to Ophelia, but rather perhaps to Queen Gertrude for her play acted out, with the purpose of determining Claudius guilt. When Hamlets doubt is dismissed, he reveals more thoughts of anger and outrage towards Claudius. O heart, lose not thy nature, let me be cruel. One of the most revealing scenes about Hamlets anger can be found where Claudius is praying to absolve his sins. Hamlet is given the chance to avenge this foul and most unnatural murder when he sees Claudius praying. Hamlet is one of the most interesting characters in English fiction because we can identify with him, and understand, although not always agree with his actions. Hamlet is also set apart by his elusiveness. Many of the characters in the play can be categorized within minutes of their introduction. Im not calling them caricatures, but there is definitely a caricature-like side to some of them. The pompous Polonius and the deceitful and thick-headed Guildenstern and Rozencrantz come to mind. However, this does not hold true for some other characters, such as Laertes and Ophelia. The character of Hamlet refuses categorization. Interesting with regard to this is his love of theater. He is particularly interested in the idea that things may seem different from what they really are, just like the people that surround him. His mother is no longer his fathers wife, but his uncles; his girlfriend is no longer there for him, and Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are no longer his friends. Also, he is aware that he will have to disguise himself and his real motives and goals in order to attain them-this is why he fakes his madness. It is not until he picks up Yoricks skull in the beginning of Act V that he finds out what is real and what is not. The Plague Around the year 542 AD a great plague came to Constantinople that so gripped the city and eventually the rest of Europe that it has altered the course of history completely. The plague reached Constantinople, the capital of Rome, during the reign of Emperor Justinian, 15 years after he took power. While we will never know the total number of people who perished from the plague it is estimated that at its height the daily death count reached 10,000 people or more. Most of the information that we have today about the Plague and its origins was written by a man named Procopius who was a legal advisor to a General named Belisarius. Procopius journeyed with Belisarius throught the Mediterranean area around the time the plague exploded. Procopius recorded his observations on how the disease effected the people, and how it ran its course, and because of his accounts, the whole of Europe eventually awakened to the reality and impending doom of the disease spreading everywhere. From the records we have today we are able to see that the first place the plague was really noticed was the Egyptian harbor town of Pelusium. The town, as most towns throughout Europe and the Mediterranean area, had a large problem with rats. Unknown to the people of that era, rats were the medium through which the disease spread from person to person, city to city, and throughout the continent. It first spread to Alexandria as it work its way northward towards Palestine.
